Miniplant-Skids made by FHNW & Aprentas

An interdisciplinary project of aprentas and the School of Life Sciences FHNW

What is it about?
Students of the School of Life Sciences of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland develop, within the framework of an innovative project, so-called Mini Plant-Skids for the new training center of aprentas in Muttenz. It is a scale-down reactor (stirred tank) including heating and cooling system.

These MiniPlant-Skids are miniature replicas of real production plants and enable trainees from the fields of laboratory, production and technology to practice the application, maintenance and repair of technical apparatuses in realistic scenarios. State-of-the-art technologies of active ingredient production and downstream processing can thus be learned in a practical manner – similar to in a flight simulator.

Together for new skilled professionals
The project sustainably promotes the collaboration between basic vocational education and the university of applied sciences. Students of FHNW receive the unique opportunity to actively experience and help shape the process of an investment project in active ingredient production. The knowledge gained is decisive for their later career in the process industry. At the same time, the trainees at aprentas are given the opportunity to experience and shape the interaction of the different disciplines.

Thus, this project strengthens in the long term the attractiveness of the involved professions at both levels of education – both in basic vocational education and at the university of applied sciences – and thereby counteracts the shortage of skilled workers.

Your support makes the difference – Together we shape the future of the process industry!

We warmly invite you to support the MiniPlant-Skids project through a sponsoring partnership. There are several ways to get involved:

1. Financial contribution
Support of the salary costs for the project work of the part-time students of FHNW and their supervision.
2. Employee involvement
Provision of experienced specialists from your company to support the students in project management or technical questions.
3. Participation in the Steering Committee
Collaboration in the strategic management of the overall project.
4. Donations in kind
Provision of apparatuses or instruments for the MiniPlant-Skids.

Project duration and start

The project is planned to start in the first quarter of 2026. An early declaration of intent from your side would help us to recruit the students of FHNW quickly and to prepare the project process optimally.
"The intensive content-related and structural collaboration between vocational education and the university of applied sciences is an important building block for the education of excellent skilled professionals."
